Shopping for the VP

31 May

I was invited, through work, to volunteer at a very important lunch supporting mental health.  This lunch included famous folks such as Buzz Aldrin, Martin Sheen, and our very own Vice President, Mr. Joseph Biden.  I was completely honored to be asked to participate, so I gladly said yes.  I then thought a little further and realized I had a problem.

What am I going to wear?

Now I know this sounds melodramatic, and probably a bit silly as well, but the more I thought about it the more I realized this could be a potential problem.

At this point I should probably back up and say that I do not own a business suit.  I’ve somehow gotten away without one these past 26 years, and I don’t have any real intention of breaking my streak.  But a lunch with the VP?  If there was ever a time for me to look uber business like, this would be it.  I probably shouldn’t wear what I wore to work the day before, for instance.

Time to go shopping.  And fortunately, I had just the friend to go with me.  Michelle is chic, classy, and above all very good at looking professional.  JUST the person I needed to make sure I shopped for work, not summer dresses.

So we went out after work.  We decided on Macy’s, hoping there would be enough sales to make things affordable (I did not want to spend hundreds of dollars on clothing I would wear maybe twice a year.).  We perused through racks and racks of suits, most of which were conservative, beige, and oddly cut.  No good.  But we did find a few items worth trying on, and lo and behold, we found this suit.

Michelle was extremely excited by this suit (It’s more coral than it looks in this photo, by the way.).  The blazer still seems a bit strange to me- too boxy?  too conservative?- but Michelle assured me that this is exactly what a suit is supposed to look like.  And since she was so enthusiastic about the piece, I ended up buying it along with a dress.

The next day I wore the dress with the one blazer I owned from before.  I think it was a good look for meeting some Kennedys, Boston Brahmin and celebrities!

PS- apologies for all the blurry photos.  They looked better on my camera than the blog.
